U.S. Ohio Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown announced the funds, which came care of Technology Innovation Program put forward by the U.S. Department of Commerce's National Institute of Standards and Technology. Almost $6.3 million of funds have been awarded, which will go to research projects in the state's Cuyahoga, Franklin, and Montgomery counties.
"Manufacturing and infrastructure projects go hand-in-hand with economic development," Brown said. "These funds will create jobs and foster long-term economic growth."
Competition for the funds for this year focused on projects that would look at taking advanced materials and creating a practical application for them. That would include examining forward-looking materials for infrastructure projects.
According to the NIST's website, the TIP program was established in 2007 in order to help researchers engaged in high-risk, high-reward projects. Funding of up to $3 million over three years is available to individual companies through the program, while joint projects are eligible for $9 million over five years.
